American Zen and ordained hierarchies Barry Magid January 13th 2018

As American Zen Buddhism becomes gradually autonomous from its original ties with Japanese Zen Buddhism, the American lay Zen teachers are also becoming autonomous and differentiated from the monastic model. The Dharma can be fully practiced, realized, expressed and transmitted in the middle of lay life. This affirmation of the viability and sustainability of lay practice places on lay practitioners great responsibility to fully express the Dharma out of our zendos into the world.
