About The Zendo

Ordinary Mind Zendo is located at 107 West 74th Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues. Ring Apt. BR. Our phone is 917-608-3348.

KOAN STUDY GROUP
Our current book for koan study is “The Blue Cliff Record.” You may use any volume of the book, however “Secrets of the Blue Cliff Record” translated by Thomas Cleary is recommended. Koan class from 12:15 to 1pm will follow regular Saturday sittings. Donation for each class is $5.

Day-long SESSHINS take place on the first Saturday of every month, unless otherwise indicated. The fees for Sesshin are: $100 for members and $125 for non-members.

If you are coming to the zendo for the first time or are visiting from out of town, especially during the summer or on holidays, it's best to contact us in advance to insure that there have not been any last minute schedule changes.

The Zendo is a center for lay practice, and is particularly appropriate for those who wish to integrate psychotherapy practice, whether as a patient or a therapist in training, with their Zen practice. Their are no monks, priests, robes, Dharma names or other denominational features associated with this center, although the basics of traditional Buddhist practice and service are maintained in a fashion designed to be in accord with the procedures of the San Diego Zen Center.

To be placed on our email list or for questions about our upcoming schedule and events, email:  swandove@ordinarymind.com.

MEMBERSHIP GUIDELINES
Barry and the Board of the Ordinary Mind Zendo have suggested these guidelines for defining membership:

Anyone is welcome to attend our regular sittings and Saturday talks regardless of membership status. Formally becoming a member however implies the following:
1. Commitment to a student/teacher relationship with Barry.
2. Commitment to the financial support of the sangha (see below for membership rates)

Zendo members will be given priority for all sesshins and for daisan on crowded days.

DUES STRUCTURE:

The following is the suggested dues structure:
$75 per month individual membership
$10 - $25 per month for student, out-of-town or low-income membership
”One hour a Week for the Dharma• Benefactor level membership: Donation calculated as 1/40 of your weekly income
$10 suggested donation for Saturday talks for non-members

You may pay your dues by the means described above in the sesshin sign-up section.
Please contribute at the highest level you can. We have been successful in having our zendo be self-supporting thus far but, as always, are dependent upon members' timely payments of dues, sesshin fees and donations. We thank you for your generous support.

As always, we welcome friends or visitors to any of our sittings, however, everyone must have instruction and/or a review of our procedure before hand. Contact the zendo to arrange for instruction before arriving.
